I doubt they really have. Meta just imported all Instagram accounts into Threads and at the same time made it impossible to delete your new account, without deleting yours on Instagram as well.
Creating high numbers...
I guess many people created an account to try but we need to wait to see the number of user stabilize.
Also, it seems the only way to emove your Threads account is to remove your instagram account ...
