Absolutely. The authors (actually two guys who wrote the books together under the pseudonym S.A. Corey) were closely involved with the series, and treated it on some levels like an opportunity to expand on certain characters and themes in ways that worked better for the cinematic version.

But as a result, the source material is still quite close to the adaptation, so it's a lot like reading an incredibly detailed shooting script, filled with lots of evocative language and details that you just can't fit on a screen. The authors just have such a great attention to detail that you really feel immersed in that world.
