I set the env variable LEMMY_DOMAIN=kerala.party in docker compose. I used reverse proxy setup for subdomains to work.

Or does lemmy allow for choosing some front end in some manner?

No this works the same way as wefwef, it uses the lemmy API to fetch the data.
