As the title implies there will be spoilers discussed but I wanted to begin a conversation about the story of TOTK.

Specifically, did it live up to expectations? What do the events mean for the overall lore of the series? Is there even a timeline at this point?

I don't think it means much for the whole series tbh. I'm in the camp that thinks Rauru's hyrule is still ages after any of the previous 3 timelines, so I don't have much to speculate about tbh.

I do wish we got a more linear story in the actual game though. The whole memories thing that was carried over from botw made it really hard for me to care about anything. Like wow I sure can sympathize with ganondorf when everything he did was forever ago. /s

Very early on into the game I thought to myself "oh this is going to be a headscratcher for timeline theorists".

Making the events shown in TotK play out across a timespan longer than all of human written history was an choice for sure, and it gives of kind of an ill-fitting feeling casually watching a cutscene that supposedly took place tens of thousands of years ago as if it just happened yesterday. We know more about what happened in the extremely distant past than what happened relatively recently in Hyrule, which is very atypical for history.

I really get the impression that they threw in the 10,000 year gap into BotW just for the sake of having a large number without considering how enormous of a time difference it really is. Even playing BotW, I was skeptical that the legend of calamity Ganon could have been remembered at all after that much time.
