This is a very weird advertising strategy indeed. I can't look at any of this objectively because I loved the books (games 1st) and Season 2 did everyone dirty. I can't bring myself to watch Season 3. They ruined it for me.
I have the same thoughts as you. The advertising seems something like what r/theonion might have.
I think it's a wise advertising strategy. I had heard that Cavill was out, and I assumed that meant he wouldn't be in season 3. That reduced the odds of me watching season 3, since the writing of season 2 was...well, you know. Now that I know he's still in it, I will definitely watch the next season.
Also, this in no way throws anyone under the bus. Clickbait headline.
I mean, I already knew he was in series 3, but can't be arsed as I know he's leaving due to how they've treated him and the source material so I have no faith in the series being any cop.
I've only watched the first two episodes and they're pretty rubbish.
