You will want to use a proper BBS compatible terminal to get the full experience: SyncTERM ^(win,mac,lin), Netrunner ^(win/lin), or mTelnet ^(win,os2)
Find oodles of software, text files, and people at The BBS Archives and The BBS Corner.
Create your own BBS with DayDream, EleBBS, Maximus, ENIGMA½, Mystic BBS, Renegade, Synchronet, or x/84.
fTelnet and HtmlTerm are Flash and HTML 5 telnet clients for access to BBSes via the web should you decide to start your own BBS.

Most of these BBSes are accessible via telnet - there are many options for telnet, but typically for BBSes you want a terminal that supports ANSI colours and IBM-PC characters (CP437). A recommended terminal program for Win/Mac/Linux is SyncTerm: https://syncterm.bbsdev.net
