Improve The News is a free news aggregator and news analysis site developed by a group of researchers at MIT and elsewhere to improve your access to trustworthy news. Many website algorithms push you (for ad revenue) into a filter bubble by reinforcing the narratives you impulse-click on. By understanding other people’s arguments, you understand why they do what they do – and have a better chance of persuading them. **What's establishment bias?** The establishment view is what all big parties and powers agree on, which varies between countries and over time. For example, the old establishment view that women shouldn’t be allowed to vote was successfully challenged. ITN makes it easy for you to compare the perspectives of the pro-establishment mainstream media with those of smaller establishment-critical news outlets that you won’t find in most other news aggregators. This Magazine/Community is not affiliated with Improve The News and is an unofficial repository of the information posted there.

  • Sweden formally joined NATO on Thursday, as Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson handed over the country's instrument of accession to the US Dept. of State — the treaty depository for the Alliance. CNN
  • A flag-hoisting ceremony will take place Monday at the NATO headquarters in Brussels to welcome Sweden as its 32nd member. BBC News (LR: 3 CP: 5)
  • This comes as Hungary, the final holdout on endorsing the Swedish bid, submitted its formal ratification to the US State Department on Wednesday, following parliamentary approval last week. TASS
  • The historically neutral Nordic country applied to join the military alliance — and enjoy the protection granted under Article 5 — nearly two years ago in the backdrop of the Kremlin's so-called special operation in Ukraine. Forbes (LR: 3 CP: 5)
  • All countries with shores on the Baltic Sea except Russia are now NATO member states — including Finland, which joined the alliance last year. Financial Times
  • Earlier this week, NATO kicked off its biannual, two-week Nordic Response drill in the northern regions of Finland, Norway, and Sweden as part of its Steadfast Defender 24 exercises. FOX News (LR: 4 CP: 4)

Pro-establishment narrative:

  • NATO has finally added Sweden's military and technological prowess to the international security bloc. Sweden is home to one of the biggest air forces in Europe, one of the leading 5G network manufacturing companies, and a robust public-private tech industry. The West is facing dangerous threats from the East, but some worries over security at least should be mitigated now that Sweden is part of the Atlantic Alliance.

Establishment-critical narrative:

  • The US and its European proxies seem to have no care for world peace. After decades of NATO expansion eastward, Russia was finally forced to stop asking and start fighting. Now that the Western military establishment has gotten the war it's sought for at least 15 years — at the expense of 400K Ukrainian soldiers and 10K civilians — the bloc continues to push eastward and further antagonize Moscow. NATO expansion is a proven cause of war, so why do they keep doing it?

Nerd narrative:

  • There's a 25% chance that Ukraine will join NATO before 2035, according to the Metaculus prediction community.

The "Establishment-critical narrative" appears to be tankies being tankies.
