I just posted the Olly one here and someone already downvoted it. 🤨
I used to own an Apple Music community on Lemmy, and it got downvoted for things that were on topic. It honestly makes me real skeptical of Lemmy as a discussion platform, even moreso than Reddit tbh.
Well, I guess people downvote things they dislike and upvote things they like. At least in big communities with plenty of posts, that works to filter bad posts out and deliver a natural sorting system.
I can't really relate with that with songs though… at least this year there is no one (yet) that I actively hate so much that I would want to downvote it, the last places are just songs I don't really like, but I can still be happy for other people if they like it.
I was just really surprised that there were only downvotes initially, meaning that just everyone who saw it on here didn't like it (which is also surprising since in other places it has been pretty well-received after an hour or so). Personally, I also really enjoy it.
And I'm sorry to hear that :/ I know it's offtopic, but may I ask why you don't own that one anymore?
Yeah, on Reddit there was seemingly an unspoken rule of downvoting only if it's off-topic or doesn't add to discussion. Not always, but given that's how a lot of subreddits worked and also the size of Reddit, that rule was better enforced while here that unspoken rule doesn't really exist.
As for why I dropped the AM community: Mainly because I was being more inactive on Lemmy so it wasn't worth me moderating it. There's also a stronghold from the FOSS/Linux community which is probably why I was getting downvotes for being on-topic on a community about Apple Music. I tried to keep it active but it just wasn't worth it if my efforts were responded to with downvotes. I also had to leave fediverse communities on Lemmy since they were getting really toxic whenever Bluesky, a platform I use alongside fedi, is posted there.
