Whether it was a cross country trip, a bike ride or on your commute to work, what is the creepiest thing you’ve seen while traveling?

i was travelling cross country on a road trip when 9/11 happened. there was a lot of hubbub in the campground the morning of and I just ignored it - as one does, when one is in a strange place surrounded by strangers. didnt actually find out what was going on until I made it to Kansas about 8 hours later and wondered why gas prices were all at $5/gal (highest I'd seen up until just a few years ago) - small towns price gouging travelers because they could. there was a lot of open carrying going on & every gas station was cash only.

it was surreal/eerie. interstate traffic noticeably died down though!
