My Grey has taken to "falling" into tight places and it's kind of freaking me out. Clothes hamper, newly emptied trash can, behind the couch, etc. I've had the thing for 25+ years and this is new behavior. Although to be honest, like most of what he does, it's kind of funny.

He's "falling", as in, he's intentionally squeezing into tight places? If so, he's discovered a fun game he can play with you. He "falls", and you have to get up and help him out of wherever he is.

Yeah, that's basically it, just a game. It's freaking me out a little because I don't want to end up throwing clothes or trash on top of him. I'm not super worried, it's just different.

25 years later and he's still finding new ways to manipulate you. My Grey is only 1 year old. Right now his favourite game is throwing toys near the dishwasher so he can go "get the toy", and while he's there, geez, look at that! The dishwasher kickplate I'm not supposed to chew on! Might as well chew it while I'm here...
