Over a decade after xb27 revealed a similar puzzle (but kept the mechanism secret), someone has replicated the feat.

Unfortunately, I can offer no help, as I fell down this rabbit hole years ago.

You'll know you're in deep when you find yourself on Etienne de Foras' page (two pieces short of the world's first 7x7), or on the twistypuzzles forum reading up on hypothetical "clip-and-slide" mechanisms.
