Thank you so much for the welcome! Can you possibly point me to any sort of FAQ or anything for newbies? I’m a little turned around and confused about the servers and communities. Just want to make sure I tread lightly and don’t rock the boat as I just arrived from jumping ship.
Lemmy is a bit strange at first if you're coming from Reddit, the only communities you'll see in the list here are ones that have been searched/subscribed to by our users. To find new stuff, you'll want to use something like browse.feddit.de/ to look for popular remote communities you want to join, then simply search their URLs here and then you can subscribe.
I have tried to pre-populate a bunch of interesting communities with an account here, but there's a ton of other subs out there to discover.
Awesome. Thank you! I’ve subbed to a few communities by random searching, but I’m glad to have like an aggregate showing. A lot of what I searched seems to be pretty dead for now. So I’d love to find some active communities. Thanks!
I honestly can't say I've seen a FAQ. In fact people have been suggesting someone makes one. But I will try and answer for you what I can.
Think of Lemmy as a food court. You know where there's communal tables surrounded by all different restaurants. Well the restaurants are the servers, we call them instances. You can get food from any of restaurants and bring them back to your table. The food would be the communities.
Does that make sense?
It would definitely be helpful, but we can all manage in the meantime. I just didn’t want to do the wrong thing or upset the balance. This is its own thing and I want to learn y’all’s procedure and whatnot and adapt to you.
Thank you for that explanation! So I can still view all other content from any instance? That’s pretty cool! Are there any standard apps that are optimized for normal use? I’m currently using Mlem because that’s what worked. But I’m also seeing references to things like Mastodon, and Lemmy.World. But I’m still not sure if the lingo or what things mean.
Thanks for taking the time to explain! I appreciate it!
