I didn't think the first Dune movie in this series was that good and the reason why was probably as you explained it. I knew there was this rich universe lore behind the series but as someone who hasn't read the books it didn't really gel that well or make much sense.
I think I was expecting something like LOTR or Star Wars and I don't think we got that.
You probably expect this comment, but I highly highly recommend reading at least the first book if you haven't already. There is a reason why there are so many movie adaptations...The book is just THAT good. It's cheap and reads quick.
