I'm looking for some help in recreating the main synth patch for "A Warm Place" by Nine Inch Nails (can be heard in the linked video) using a software synth.

I think one of the main components to the patch is some kind of organ voice but beyond that I'm a bit lost as to what I should try. I'm pretty new to creating synth patches, but I learn best by experimenting and trying to reproduce things I know I like. I'm not looking to recreate this sound perfectly, but if anyone here could offer some guidance on how to achieve a roughly similar sound, or even just a good place to start, I'd really appreciate it.

I'm mainly using ZynAddSubFX but don't mind trying out other software.

Came across your post just scrolling. I'm not a musician at all. Out of curiosity, I figured I'd ask chat gpt and see what it said.

Does any of this help?

In ZynAddSubFX, you can create a warm pad similar to "A Warm Place" by following these steps:

  1. Add a New Synth:

    • Open ZynAddSubFX and add a new synthesizer.
  2. Oscillator Setup:

    • Use multiple oscillators with saw or sine waveforms. Adjust detuning for richness.
  3. Envelope Settings:

    • Set a slow attack to create a gradual onset.
    • Adjust decay and sustain to control the release characteristics.
  4. Filter Configuration:

    • Apply a low-pass filter to soften the sound.
    • Experiment with filter envelope modulation for evolving timbres.
  5. Modulation Sources:

    • Use the LFOs for subtle pitch or filter modulation.
    • Experiment with the modulation matrix for more intricate control.
  6. Effects Section:

    • Utilize the built-in effects, such as reverb and chorus, to enhance the warmth and spaciousness.
  7. Fine-Tuning:

    • Spend time adjusting parameters and listening closely to achieve the desired warmth and evolving quality.

ZynAddSubFX is known for its flexibility, so feel free to explore various parameters and modulation possibilities. Careful tweaking will help you capture the atmospheric qualities found in "A Warm Place."

Thanks for your effort, but that's not helpful at all. Hilariously so for anyone who has worked with a synth before. Real rest of the owl stuff.
