Why didn’t they send reboot bodies up to the ship and work remotely?

oh damn, brilliant point, I have to admit I missed that.

To be generous to the writers:
Equipment required for that side is heavier, and/or requires more power/support than humans
But we haven't seen anything about that

Don’t be too generous to writers as they couldn’t be bothered to make this story slightly more coherent ;)
