I'm so lucky not to have coworkers anymore. I used to hate that - I'm usually on my way somewhere, and I'm trying to remember of what I need to do there or after I get back, and then BAM! Unexpected conversation on which I cannot focus.
and afterwards you can't remember either
That's exactly it. It's in one ear and out the other.
I find it nearly impossible to remember small talk info, which can be crucial in building relationships. I literally have notes on my phone for each person I want to keep up with where I jot down important details after conversations, but of course I only do it for certain people. Everyone else is SOL.
I'll often leave a conversation completely certain of how it went. If I'm asked to recall what someone said, though, I'm at a loss. I stash notepads everywhere.
I'm good with really important stuff but with idle chitchat I'm terrible with recall unless it's super interesting. Then I'll pull out a fact someone mentioned one time five years ago and watch them lose their mind.
You just described me. What is it with being able to remember something really obscure? I have a great memory for some things but definitely not most.
It's like living life with an endless highlight reel to pull from. And you'll constantly add to the archive when you find something interesting whether you like it or not.
That's an excellent way of putting it.
