Нещодавно спеціальний черевик для саперів, розроблений нашими інженерами-ентузіастами, врятував нашому саперу ногу. Боєць обійшовся переломом ноги без втрати кінцівки.

Sapper: A military engineer who lays, detects, and disarms mines.

It's a pretty largely encompassing term these days. Pretty much any engineer in a combat situation.

Breaching fortifications (the original usage), building bridges, demolitions, etc.
