I was playing them in emulation on a Linux PC. This was because I love those games, not due to poverty (?)

are you just that young that you think 8-bit was within your lifetime?

?? Do you mean old? 8 bit was in my lifetime. First machines i had were Atari 2600, Commodore 64, and a Sega Master System.
