I saw Warhammer Orks first, then discovered Foss later, and realized, oh, that’s where checkerboards and stripes got popular.

And Foss' patterns are probably inspired by (WWI) Dazzle camouflage (wikipedia):

The search for "chris foss" "dazzle" on Google shows some restuls, but I haven't dig too much.
