Lemmy is a bit rough around the edges. If I enable non-local instances, which is the only thing that makes sense to me, it seems broken in that new stories will pop up continuously regardless of filter or sorting. Anyone know of a workaround for this?

Yep, change the link from /1 to /0 like: https://lemmy.world/home/data_type/Post/listing_type/All/sort/Active/page/0 Instead of https://lemmy.world/home/data_type/Post/listing_type/All/sort/Active/page/1
