This is why I would avoid middle man if possible. Another mouth to feed. Might as well save the insurance money instead of paying it.

For some things saving for the risk is not possible for normal people. You probably can't have enough saved in case your house burns down, you maim someone with your car, you need a medvac from abroad etc.

you have ust a good as much chance at winning the lottery

[–] [email protected] 6 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Unfortunately no, the odds of you experiencing catastrophe are much higher than your odds of winning the lottery, especially if you live an active lifestyle.

do you know anyone that had any of those things happen to them?

[–] [email protected] 5 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Yes. Every single one of those examples actually. I'm not being hyperbolic or joking. I know different people who have experienced at least one of each of those scenarios.

I'd suggest you have a more unique experience then. I couldn't say I have met anyone that ticks those boxes.

That's what I do. Insurance is legalized extortion

[–] [email protected] 4 points 11 months ago

Insurance is privatized social safety net with profit seekers as the middle man... :(
