Have you tried making your photos smaller before uploading? At least my instance doesn't let me upload photos if they're over a megabyte and the error message (if there is any) about it is not very helpful.

Oh, thank you for reminding me, I had actually downloaded the image toolkit app from f-droid but hadn't played with it yet. The limit for my current server is 100kb unfortunately. And last I saw, lemmy.world (where my previous account is) wasn't allowing people to upload media because they were dealing with people abusing the functionality to post child pornography or something like that

The image quality isn't great, but at least compressed I can still post things through the jerboa app. I had totally forgot I'd already found a decent Foss app to do image compression

Never mind, even after compressing down to under 50kb, it still won't work and although the error message in jerboa is cut off, it looks to be saying the image is too large 🙃
