I understand your frustration with people walking backwards. It's pretty strong in general but there are ways to play against it. I personally had this issue because my character (Marisa) has no lows that grant a combo other than cr.lk which is never in range to hit if they're actively walking away.
So here is what I would advise:
Actually dash forward. For a long time I basically forgot that dashing forward is a real option. Obviously you can't spam it but it should move you forward faster than them walking backward.
Learn to value them giving up screen space. This one is a change in perspective. Them just walking backward and you walking forward should be considered a win all on it's own. They will eventually walk themselves into a corner which means better pressure and damage for you. This of course doesn't work if you let them escape the corner once there, so you need to have your antiairs sharp and ready to go. Additionally, you need to think differently about your spacing, stand somewhere that's going to make it the hardest for them to escape. Lastly for this point you need to remember that it's not a race. You have TONS of time on the clock so just be patient and don't rush things and overextend.
As for drive rush checking, if you're getting blown up by fireballs, my guess is that you're checking with too big of a button. Even if it only get a jab out of it they still spent their bar and you're likely in a decent pressure situation afterwards.
Thank you, I'll try using forward dash more, I rarely use it cause it feels so unsafe.
As for them walking themselves into the corner, I understand that that's supposedly to my advantage but once in corner, they just drive rush or jump out and I have such a difficult time reacting to whatever they do.
I have been using mp for checking drive rush, I'll try using jab more.
It's definitely frustrating when they escape but that's part of where the "being patient" thing comes in. Even if they jump over you and you have to walk them to the other corner, that's fine because you have the time to do that.
Reacting is hard to give advice on. The best I can do is reiterate about spacing. Technically the further away from then you are the more time you gave to react to them doing all sorts of stuff. Obviously you can't just stay super far away from them but you might see if standing just a little further away than you currently do makes the difference.
Yeah it ain't happening dude, thanks for trying to help but I've been fighting nothing but djs and Kens all night and I want to die. I'm done.
Sajam put out a video on this very subject and can explain what you need to do much better than me: https://youtu.be/wq88UvDbj6E
Yeah I saw that, think it's more just a matter of me being bad lol. Taking a break from the game while I wait for my new controller to be delivered, will try to approach the game with better mindset then.
I think I just gotta stop, I was excited to try my new controller and was very quickly reminded why I was so upset last time I stopped playing this game.
