the ideal is a soft spot with an existing dip. alternatively, you can scoop/shape the terrain to fit your body. i prefer sleeping under a tree where possible and one can easily shape the leaves/pine needles/detritus.

Here in Australia sleeping under gum trees is dangerous as they randomly shed limbs. But on the bright side we don't have bears (everything else on the continent is going to try to kill you though)

Keep that drop bear spray handy, though. It won't save you, but maybe the other campers will smell it in time to get away.
