Well shit I’m surprised, that’s a crap ton of damage for a deer.
Those fucks are like brick walls. I've seen them total more then a few cars.
Probably poor placement of the deer jumping at the time of collision. I do know that the damage is typically a lot less from deer.

Crumple zones are in the bumper and is for the occupants I believe. And as for pedestrians and wildlife, you want to deflect them, absorbing it would put more force and damage on them iirc.
