Polymerase chain reaction. Was next in line of "this will revolutionize science and change everything." Actually did revolutionize and change everything.
Without getting into too much detail, it's a way of isolating and amplifying DNA. You can screen for nearly anything quickly and easily (now). Doesn't sound app that important, until you see how it's being used.
