I hate whoever thought this was a good idea.
GPDR.
They have to be explicit because before they were implicit and selling your cookie data all over the place. So legislation says you have to be explicit about your policy and usage.
Too many sites still use cookies in a way that's not necessary though and I'm looking forward to the de-cookification for a lot of things.
I hate GPDR too. If I want to create my own website / app how do I even comply with it? Does Lemmy comply with it?
If you don't use tracking cookies you'll be compliant :)
But if my app requires user accounts, I need to follow GDPR, right?
If you have user accounts and personal data, the cookie bit is the least of your GDPR problems
