I think politicians are more afraid of voters and their reaction to significant meat price increase.

Poultry is staple food in much of the world. Caged farming is used because it is cheap. When it is forbidden the staple food will get more expensive. And it will hurt the poor the most.

Yes meat price increase is the way to goโ€ฆ but that is not easy to push and will hurt not those we want. Things would be easier if we can find cheap, healthy (most 'meat alternatives' are highly processed food, which is not better than meat) alternative that people will accept.

  1. Nutritionally, you don't specifically need meat alternatives. For protein, even just peas will do (yes, there are other things in meat as well, this is an example). For the most part, people just need to learn to cook differently.
  2. Tofu is an example of a food that (in its pure form) is really healthy, not processed much, inexpensive, and which is often counted as a meat alternative.
  3. Even the highly processed plant protein + seasoning types of food tend to be more healthy than animal meat, provided the seasoning doesn't include too much salt/sugar. (They also tend to be less healthy than just eating the actual plant product though.)

Ok. Now convince milions relying on meat.

Government politician telling people 'stop eating meat, that will be better for you and to make the switch easier we will make meat more expensive' won't be a government politician after next elections.

No one relies on meat. The poorest countries in the world rely on rice and beans for protein
