The danger is more similar to email. Many different implemations of the same standard can lead to a standstill featurewise.
you could say the same thing about linux, but its growing and evolving because of the various avenues that use it.
Also you could say the same about apples and oranges... Sure, we have learned a lot about platform extensibility since the inception of email, but this only shields us against the repetition of mistakes we already made. I both hope and root for de fediverse to thrive.
