Cutwords (aka Cu2rds)

41 readers
1 users here now

Cutwords (aka Cu2rds) - when words are cut (or smooshed together) in unintended places, creating a completely different meaning.

Rules

  1. Posts must feature a wrong syntaxic interpretation (for example, a word being read as two words or vice-versa) leading to an unintended meaning. (Except meta posts - see rule 4.)

  2. Language - any language is allowed for now, but please indicate it with the language setting on post creation.

  3. Reposts - duplicates of posts already posted in Cu2rds will be removed. Reposts from other communities are allowed and welcomed.

  4. Meta posts - if your post is about the Cu2rds community itself (e.g. suggestions for rule changes) please start your title with a [META] tag.

  5. The usual - no illegal stuff, be nice to each other and respect the lemmy.world and Lemmy rules.

These rules are intentionally very laxist for now to allow more content there - we'll see if we need more strict rules if the community grows.

My intention was to at first allow any language to have more content at the beginning, but later switch to English only when the community would grow large enough for other languages to have their own community. But I understand that users might not enjoy content in a language they don't understand.

I propose the following options :

  • Keep Rule 2 as is, allowing foreign language posts
  • Allow foreign language posts but request a short explanation in English.
  • Stick to English only.

(I'm not sure how the built-in Lemmy language setting works, hence why I'm not using it yet.)

(This is my first experience with moderation, so I'm not sure how to handle it, hence why I'm asking you how you want it. Also why I've allowed everyone to post meta suggestion posts with rule 4.)

The built-in lemmy language tool is specifically for this. Its why it always says if you leave language unselected you may get less interaction. Just encourage your posters to use that tool. Requiring someone who doesn't speak english to do a small English translation will just lead them to not using this community. English only seals you of from people critical to building ypur community. Its your choice but i recommend just having everyone use the built in tool. Trust me people can easily just look past the other languages if they see them.

Thanks for advice ! I added the language tags on the two posts, and will adjust rule 2 to ask to indicate language with the built-in settings.
