Banner alt-text: Stone Church in Desolation Point, during an aurora. The moon hovers large, low in the sky. A fire crackles under the ruined wall of the church. The displayed health bar is distressingly low.

@rbos yeah, that sounds like a great spot. I haven't spent enough time there to have settled on a favourite base. Cargomaster's is good, but everywhere is so far away.
In my current run I have long cattail breadcrumb trails around HRV, from Starsteps to the scrub brush cave to Valley View. Took ages but very useful in a blizzard, I'm proud of my creation!
Yeah, the travel times in FA make everything harder and a little more tedious, and any given round trip requires planning and some recovery afterwards.
Well done with the breadcrumb trails! I get soooo lost in HRV, it's a great region but I've only spent a cumulative maybe 40 days in it, most of that in the cave a little east (I think) of Stairsteps Lake. I think that's the scrub brush cave you mentioned.
@rbos That's my central base in HRV but I find that level of the map to be sooo hard to internalise for some reason. The charcoal map is no help, either. I'm really taking my time there rn so I can really get to know it.
Super easy to get turned around there, yeah. The breadcrumbs are a great idea. I liked Monolith Lake the most out of the areas that I briefly visited in HRV while doing Faithful Cartographer. Good food supply, pretty scenery, easy to navigate. And with the new fishing system, there may be some reasonably sheltered spots for a hole in the ice. But I've found those really hard to use in interloper. Fishing badly needs places where you can reliably have a fire for 24-48 hours straight.
