I can't speak for most people but I feel anyone substantially socially and environmentally aware the movie goes from comedy to drama, I legitimately couldn't help but become emotionally invested in the plight of the main characters and the humour never hit.
Enjoy your BG3, I'm right near the end of my first playthrough myself.
