Isn't impeachment always a political weapon? Also, you miss 100% of the shots you don't take. Nobody can see the future, so to find out for sure if he would get convicted or not, they had to impeach him. Lastly, by doing so, even if they knew the conviction chances were slim, they accomplished, at least, two things. First, they definitively declared their belief that his actions made him unfit to be president. Secondly, they forced every congressperson to pick a side.
What do you mean we couldn’t see the future? The vast majority of the Republican Party are Trump loyalists. They know if they don’t follow him, they’re doomed. Look at Liz Cheney.
I mean exactly what I said. Sure, you can make some educated guesses, but you don't know for sure. Most people didn't think Trumpty Dumpty would win in 2016.
