Generally "sock yarn" tends to be fingering weight (US) / 4-ply (UK) / whatever they call it in other parts of the world. And it'll generally include something like nylon or similar to make it more hard wearing, too.
Most of it is superwash merino, you can throw it in the washing machine.
Ah that makes sense, I think I skimmed the "sock" part to mean "scrap from former sock projects" rather than "sock yarn". I know you generally make socks from sock yarn but, you never know!
