I think the books addressed this? I never read them but from what I heard he fought another gorilla for a mate but when he won he thought it would be weird and wrong so he didnt clap cheeks

I really hope that because he couldn't slap gorilla cheeks, he chose to spank his monkey, and hence that phrase originated in this book
