With incredible, often mind-bending storylines that provide food for thought and intriguing visuals, the science fiction genre, which dates back to 1902's Le Voyage dans la Lune, is one of the most treasured by general audiences. What is so great about these films is how genre-blending and versatile they can be, providing audiences with unique narratives.

Although there are countless great sci-fi movies out there, some have fallen extremely short of the audience's expectations, which can be particularly disheartening when they initially held great potential. From Downsizing to Battlefield Earth, we look back at some of the weakest sci-fi movies to date, courtesy of moviegoers on Reddit.

The problem with these "worst movies" lists is that there are loads of terrible movies that people aren't aware of because they didn't have big releases and they just immediately fizzled. So they always end up being the worst movies that were good enough or well funded enough for lots of people to have seen them.

Yep. I have seen a couple of old SF films on vhs that make asylum films look like Kubrick.

But "This movie is so bad I stopped watching it after 10 minutes, destroyed the tape and paid the lost fee to the video store so there is one less copy of this dreck in the world" will never end up on a list lkie this.

Another factor is Good/great actor in a shit film will always rank higher than Bunch on nobodies in a shit film. Battlefield Earth being the best example.

Yep, great points. Honestly, your latter point about good actors in bad films is the fodder for a lot of these lists. People know about the movie because of someone in it.

Exactly.
The simple fact that Skyline is on this list proves that it's total nonsense. Because Skyline had two sequels that were worst that the first movie, and none of those sequels is on the list.
