That bit about being ‘better’ if you drag the coffin around feels a little…judgemental/ego boosting? I’m struggling to find the right word. Just seems like the potential to feel holier than thou is pretty high in this metaphor.

Respectfully, the word 'better' isn't used. The last paragraph describes three stages of relationship to the casket, i.e. trapped inside, dragged behind or disappeared.

It is used. Read the next sentence. It says that those who drag theirs are only a step better.
