I don't use Mastodon much at all, but have mostly the same feeling. Any alternative internet platform has the geeks first.

Lemmy being primarily a place to share links is better at it, as people share just about anything. But a platform mostly made for blogging - well that will be programming first, politics next, the rest maybe eventually.
