Isn't there a designated chip for the esim? From what I found, it looks like it is a physical Item too. We could of course argue that standard sim require a sim reader on the phone.

But the possibility to replace a SIM if defective without replacing the whole phone is an advantage. You can also swap sim really easily when travelling.

But the esim doesn't need to be at the edge of the phone body. It enables significant simplification in layout design.
