Why do the wild leach off this? The wild have never achieved any success has a hockey franchise since its conception.

Maybe this will give you an idea. There are 59 active Minnesotans in the NHL. The second most players from an US state are 38 from Michigan. Similarly, only the provinces of Ontario and Québec have more active players in the NHL. Not to mention that highschool hockey is a huuuuge deal in MN.
