How to find wood for green woodworking? (self.woodworking)

I'm trying to find some wood to use, but am not sure what to look for. I'm mainly interested in building simple stools. I live in south Alabama and the nearest lumber yard is 3 hours away.

I get woodturning logs from posts on Craigslist or FB Marketplace. Your city might also have a yard waste dump that you could rummage through. Mine welcomes people taking logs off their hands, although the pile is 90% dead Ash ๐Ÿ˜Ÿ
