Yes time limit, every competitive ruleset has a timer. You need it to prevent stalling and other such poor behavior.
Also, restricting to only battlefield would massively advantage any chars who KO off the top. There’s a list of legal stages for each game to keep things balanced when competing in best of 3+
Yeah agreed for a real competition.
This is just my preferred rule set for “competitive play” with my friends.
I prefer no time since we won’t really cheese each other and some of the battles end up being fierce.
Battlefield only just saves time from actually picking stages but you’re right about advantages. This really just carried over from our melee days where we always played battlefield.
Hmm, if your battles feel aggressive they shouldn’t be taking a long time at all. It may be the case that you guys are just trading in neutral constantly without really following up, only taking stocks once the opponent has reached very high percents.
Not that there’s a problem with that or anything. But it sounds like you guys have been playing for years, so I think you’d sincerely just enjoy the game that much more if you looked into playing with a proper tournament ruleset + learned the kill setups for your mains. The timer isn’t just for preventing cheese, it also dictates the flow of the match, placing pressure on the disadvantaged player to take decisive actions. You miss out on that whole element of the game playing with house rules.
I guess it’s really just been habit more than anything. What is the standard time limit for matches in competitive?
Depends on the game, and then there can also some variation depending on the tournament organizers. But usually you’ll see 4 stock 8 mins for melee, and 3 stock 7 mins for ultimate.
