Becoming a mod of a community when the old mod is banned (lemmy.ml)

The mod of a small community I follow appears to be banned from our instance. I really like the community, and I don't want to let it die. Is there a way that I could become the mod for that community?

I tried messaging the old mod, but I haven't gotten a response. He shows as banned, so I don't even know if he's getting my messages.

How can I confirm that the mod is banned from the instance, and they are not moderating the community anymore? Can I take over the moderation of that community? And how?

They have a sub for these community transfer requests: https://lemmy.ml/c/community_requests

Request there along with what you've done to contact the existing mod and they'll likely help you.
