Move to lemmy.tips? (lemmy.xylight.dev)
submitted 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) by [email protected] to c/[email protected]

This instance doesn't actually exist yet. I was wondering if I should make my own public instance with the domain lemmy.tips.

Currently this is hosted on lemmy.xylight.dev which is a horrible name.

Or should I instead buy the phtn.app domain for Photon instead of hosting a new instance? Money is tight, I can only pick one.

Do you have a way to accept donations? I would be willing to donate for a domain.

Otherwise, I think phtn.app domain makes more sense (ie. focus on the app, rather than hosting an instance).

I don't take donations

phtn.app is $14/year on google domains, I'll go ahead and possibly buy it

As a heads up, Google Domains is being acquired by Squarespace:

I use Porkbun as my registrar and it has phtn.app for $12.85 / year. That said, namecheap also has it for $14.98 / year (but 16.98 / year for renewal).

Alright, I've purchased it from porkbun. I want to use phtn.app to death like I did with xylight.dev. Perhaps I can change my "brand name" (which currently is Xylo) to Photon?

Xylo could still be your brand, and Photon just one of your products/services/creations... it's up to you.

I'm aware. I'll wait to see if they do anything hostile before transferring. My second choice would be Vercel domains as their prices are always consistent
