Up next is my favorite Muff variant. The Earthquakes Devices Hoof.

I have an obsession with Fuzz and Muff style Fuzzes. I've had and have SO many fuzz and fuzz adjacent pedals. (I'll list them out for those who care at the end.) Somehow I always come back to the Hoof. I know amp-like isn't something you use to describe a Muff but that's how I feel about the Hoof. It's really dynamic and reacts to your picking and volume incredibly well. It has that Muff sound without the boominess you get with something like a Triangle Muff. Maybe it's the circuit, maybe it's the shift knob. I don't know but nothing has managed to remove it from my board. The only thing I don't like about MY Hoof is that it's a V2(?) with the clicky foot switch that you really have to step on. Which is weird when all of my other EQD pedals have the flexi switch.

I use the Hoof like everywhere when I jam or record and keep it set pretty high and roll off the guitar volume if I need less gain. I probably pair it most with my delays when I want to use it for a solo and don't tend to stack it with other gain pedals. I have a Plumes to do the TS+Muff thing but I don't play live so I don't necessarily need to get the mids back.

Other "fuzz" pedals I have:

  • Vaderin HP-X
  • EDQ Hizumitas
  • EQD Spires
  • DOD Carcosa
  • Triangle Big Muff Reissue
  • Rams Head Reissue
  • Fuzz Face clone
  • Tonebender clone

Fuzzes I've had:

  • EQD Acapulco Gold
  • EQD Hoof Reaper
  • Band of Gypsies Fuzz Face Mini
  • Black Arts Toneworks Pharaoh
  • Big Muff Pi w/ Tone Wicker
  • Black Box Russian Muff

Had a Hoof… traded it… have regrets. Hold on to your Hoofs (Hooves?), friends!

I had one and ended up returning it... To me it was too "overdrive-y" and not enough fuzzy. Plus, it seemed like a pedal that really wanted to be loud, which could have been part of my issue with it, but in an apartment bedroom can't really be accommodated.
