I'm browsing 9gag for years. I see everything and I can opt out of topics.
On lemmy I have to actively subscribe to subs. That means I miss out on topics I'm not aware of. On pixelfed I also have to actively search for a tag. Same for mastodon.
How can I have a similar experience to 9gag (I am not speaking of the content. A lot of content is not what I am looking for. I refuse to make an account on 9gag but I'm fine wirh a fediverse account.
There should be an "all" tab or feed that you can go to on your platform - Mastodon has one, not sure about Pixelfed, and Lemmy has one too, that may give you the diversity that you're looking for?
That shows you everything, not only memes, right?
I’m still relatively new here so I’m not sure either. But maybe there’s a catalogue or list servers by topic out there? The search function on the Voyager app has made it pretty quick for me to find some of my favorites.
But how do you get new content? Assume "star wars" comes out tomorrow. How would I see that there is the new tag/sub? I'd have to actively search for it which is what I don't like
As others have said you can set your feed to "all active" or "all top 6h". If you select all instead of local or subscribed you'll see something similar to Reddit /all

I understand what you're saying. Using big ol' American social media, you became dependent to algorithms, that regularly show you similar content that you might be interested in without explicitly requesting it (This is how I found the BuyFromEU sub on reddit that lead me here). The thing is: this is really unhealthy and you're letting a company or network decide what you're interested in. You have to and will get used to it, even if it means you're missing out on things in the beginning. I'm following the suggestion from others and scroll through "all" from time to time, which presented me some cool communities that I follow now. Hang in there!
I agree. there's nothing wrong with a hot or top section. Platform curated stuff "only for you" is bad.
Even if a platform curates stuff it can be good, if everyone sees it.
I do not want to sit only in my bubble (like people tend to be on tiktok, facebook et al).
I want to see what others do. Automatically. Lemmy already has a feed for everything and hot and active etc. But not only for memes. Multicommunities are a good step towards that but we are not there yet.
Lemmy still lacks tags.
I am still in the same 5 subs I was 3 years ago. Just because I am not aware of other subs and I am too old to have 10 friends all meming their way through the web
Ahh you mean like a trending function? I know BlueSky has a trending function to see those new hashtags and big topics. I like using both Lemmy and BlueSky but for slightly different purposes.
Usually I’d just scroll through my already subscribed servers first here on Lemmy, and then I’d look at All sorted by Active for what big right now for all topics, after that I sort by Hot to get a glance of content that’s rising. I don’t usually search that much unless it’s a new topic I want to read more about like recipes, most recently.
There might be a trending function here, but I haven’t been around long enough to know for sure. Hopefully this helps a bit! I’m sure someone more knowledgeable can help give a more in-depth answer.

You’re welcome! Ya that’s more for all stuff, not just memes. I see what you’re saying though, cause what if a new meme page comes out for X topic. You likely won’t have the new meme page recommended to you.
Maybe there is a server recommendation tool built in somewhere? But I don’t know if there’s one that would catch new servers to recommended like for a new show’s meme page. To feel that would mean they have some kind of algorithmic recommendations feature, but I don’t think I’ve seen something like that.
The Ice Cubes app for Mastodon has a trending function, but it’s based solely on aggregating boosts and favorites (from what I can tell). The Impressia app for Pixelfed has this as well, but it offers the options to see trending posts or tags, etc. (I’ve found Impressia to be way better than the Pixelfed app on iOS, tbh).
Just open TikTok! Now your problem is solved, as well as mine.
