So I had a weird issue with my AC that I don’t even know how to begin googling. My air conditioner was running perfect for three years then all of a sudden started to go in and out one day. The airflow remained a constant though. At first I thought it was just too hot outside, but realized that wasn’t the case because it was just as hot a day ago. I then took out the cabin air filler, cleaned it, and ran it without the filter for like 30 minutes. It kept me cool the whole time. I put the filter back in, and it ran fine for another 2 days until now. I’m not flush with cash, what could I try as a quick fix? Any advice helps

Could be a couple of reasons:

  1. Leak in the system
  2. Compressor is giving out
  3. Possibly an electrical issue

You can check your pressure levels in the system, if they are low, you have a leak or need to pump some freon (or whatever they are using nowadays) into it.

If that helps, it means the issue was that. If it stops working after a month or two, you have a leak in your system.

If your pressure levels are good, it might be the compressor. Check the electrical connections, maybe something shook loose. If those are fine, it might be the compressor itself. I'd give that to check to a mechanic.

If none of the above, maybe your alternator or your car battery isn't giving it enough juice to power the system.

Good luck.

I've also seen A/C systems refuse to turn on from an engine overheating. They were driving it every day with the "H" pegged and didn't think anything of it.
