I'm sure he takes loans on assets, but he absolutely cashes out actual Tesla stock and has done so multiple times.
This was one of his arguments to the Tesla board when he demanded $55b. He said he needed more stock to maintain control. How did he have less stock? He sold it for cash in the past. This is one of many reasons why the Tesla board should have told him to pound sand. Instead, they gave him what he asked for, and in my mind, violated their fiduciary responsibilities in doing so.
