How likely are those to remain viable once the source (Firefox) becomes too disparate?

Gonma cross that bridge once we get there...

But yes not very viable once mozila pulls a Donald Trump

I think there is do work being done on alternatives.

Also, firefox code base could be forked and we all will need to pay for it to be developed like adults

Yeah we have all our eggs in this one basket now. Would be nice if Europe would fund an alternative or two.
