those who consider themselves to speak multiple native languages, how does it impact your culture? what are some advantages/disadvantages you faced? (feddit.cl)

technically my first language is english, but i also grew up speaking portuguese and english.

although people say i speak portuguese better, i see the advantage that i can communicate with most of the americas. (except for those who don’t speak either language or canadians who only know French)

I grew up speaking Slovenian and Croatian but then moved to Germany where I went to school. Later I immigrated to the UK and learned English which I speak fluently as well. I found that my dreams tend to be in the language of whatever country I live in after a while. I can sing really well in Slovenian and Croatian but not in English or German despite knowing songs in all the languages. I keep a journal that is written in English but when I want to be really expressive I use Slovenian. When I talk to family back home, my friends say it sounds like we are arguing, but it is just how we talk with a lot of passion. My personality changes a lot with a different language.I am more serious and together feeling when I speak English. I have found that languages hugely impacts culture and how people behave or don't behave respectfully towards others., hence the purges of all words from every government document mentioning DEI.
